How cold does the weather need to get to endanger my dog?
Concerned Rancher asked:
I have two min pins that stay outside during the day while we are at work. I have built a dog run on the side of the garage, put a dog door in so they can come inside. I have also put down blankets, and got a small office heater to go during the day. We also just purchased some dog clothing for them. Was wondering since they are min pins and with very little hair, and they in real danger of freezing to death?

Absolutely!
Short Haired dogs are very sensitive to cold weather. Please find a way to keep them inside during the day. I have a Boston Terrier, also a short-haired dog and he shakes all the time when he is cold.
Sweaters and blankets are ok, but the dog really should not be left outside during cold weather.

It sounds like you’ve taken all necessary precautions to ensure your beloved pets are warm enough.

They should be fine, if they have access to the inside and some heat.
I do have a concern about putting clothes on them without supervision. There could be a hanging or choking risk, but I don’t know how your yard is set up.
EDIT
I hope the heater is stable enough to not cause fire, if it is tipped over. Also make sure the blankets can’t come in contact with the front of the heater.

below 20 you need to bring them in; between 20 and 35 they are suspectible to frostbite on sensitive areas (tips of ears, feet). yes, they are in danger of freezing to death if exposed to below freezing temps for too long.

They should be absolutely fine. Dogs did live thier lives outside before humans decided to make them pets…….It has only been in the last 100 years they have actually spent the majority of thier time indoors with us.

Anything over 40 F should do no harm!

REMEMBER ANSWERER’S…..CONCERNED RANCHER SAID THERE *IS* A DOGGIE DOOR!!
I think you already covered one BIG point to help yourself………You have a DOGGIE DOOR!!! As long as they are able to get inside where there is shelter and cover, they will! Our son-in-law is a Fireman/Paramedic. Please make sure that the heater that you chose to use is a very high quality one, and one that is well away from the dogs hitting it, bumping it, and from getting burns. The big thing is that they are able to get INSIDE and away from rain, snow, sleet, and freezing cold if they need to, AND…they are able to get outside when they need to expel and run. Thank goodness for doggie doors!!
Dogs in our age of time are quite domesticated and need warmth, and companionship of humans. You sound like one that loves and cares about their biggest needs. Thank you!!

Wow, that depends on were you live. Think about yourself would you like to stay out barely dressed for 8 hours, now think of your dogs and you’ll find the answer.
