Why don’t people treat dogs like animals?
faqpro asked:
I see people clothing their dogs, making their dogs live inside, and doing everything they can to spoil them. For crying out loud they are animals! They love the outdoors- they are survivors of the wild. They have fur- they dont need clothes, it is torture. Can someone tell me why people are like this with their dogs?
People are saying how would you like to live outside? I love the outdoors. I wouldn’t mind living in the wilderness. People are also saying dogs lost their sense of hunting? NO they didn’t- dogs still hunt and they are survivors of the wild.

With my breed of choice (Italian Greyhounds) It would be TORTURE to not have them live inside or put on a jacket when it is below freezing outside.
Believe me, they are treated like dogs, they just get extra precautions to ensure their safety.

its torture for some dogs to live outside. some dogs with short hair cant stand the cold for a long time depending on where you live. People can spoil them if they want. Some are treated like kids to them because they cant have there own kids. I treat my dog as my baby. She isnt spoiled. People can do what they want. Sorry not trying to be rude or anything. : )

Well apparently you don’t understand that we created dogs. Dogs are not wolves. They are domesticated and have lost a lot of their natural hunting instinct. If I left my dog to live outside he would end up starving to death because 1. We don’t live near any kind of wild game except squirrels and birds. 2. He doesn’t have a thick fur coat.
Dressing dogs up in dresses and silly clothing is dumb. However, putting a coat on a greyhound in the winter because otherwise they would freeze is not.

Well dressing there dog i am ttly against that! well ppl do that because animals actually want to be loved but what some of you said is true!

idk but i wish people did

Humans are animals, duh. We’re all in the same kingdom of life. All living beings are one of five things:
*Animals
*Plants
*Fungi
*Protists
*Bacteria
There is a sixth debatable category for virii, which have some characteristics of life but not others.
Humans and dogs are both denning animals. We both need shelters.

i HATE it when people are mean to ther dogs and put cloths on them! is soooooooo sad!!!!!!!!! i treat my dog as the best DOG not human. i mean why would any dog like to be treated like a human?srry i just get kinda mad at those people!:)

Um… You’re an animal, too, you know?
Would you care for us to treat you as you should and have you live outside, never allow you to bath, eat disgusting things and succumb to the forces of nature that WE as a species have forgotten to defend ourselves against, hm?
Dogs are the same way. Just because they might seem like ‘animals’ doesn’t mean they have that exact same wilderness streak that wild animals have.
They are DOMESTICATED. That means that we has a people have taught them different through thousands upon thousands of years of breeding.
Go outside and live in your backyard for a month in all the weather conditions that your residency has to offer.
Then come back and tell us how you feel. You’ll get a general gist of what dogs, or any other animal that aren’t used to such a thing (i.e farm animals, feral cats and) and tell me how it went.

I would never put clothes on my dog. Ever. That’s just ridiculous. But yes, my dog lives inside with me, and he goes outside whenever he wants. I don’t see the point in having a dog unless you’re going to enjoy the companionship it has to offer.. And I don’t feel like going out in the cold every time I feel like giving my dog a hug ’cause I’m having a bad day.
You wonder why people let their dogs live inside, I wonder why people bother having them if they’re gonna keep them outside.

I had a pomeranian. They are high-maintenance as far as fur-brushing. They are very fluffy. We kept her unmatted for the most part, but once a year we had to shave her down to the skin, because the undercoat got so matted. We would put her in a sweater then. Just to make sure she was comfortable. She appreciated it, because you could tell she was cold without it. She lived inside because little dogs aren’t survivors of the wild.
Note: We’d do it around March/April (shaving her, I mean)… after winter was officially over. Because pomeranian’s hair acts as a coat in the winter, and as insulation from the heat in the summer. So this way, by the time summer heat hit, she’d have her hair back again, in time to insulate her from the heat. And her hair used to grow really fast.

Its because these people aren’t responsible enough to care for actual children, so they decide to treat their dog as one. And I agree that some animals have EXTREMELY short coats and may need some extra protection, but there is not sense in clothing a long haired breed in the middle of a Las Vegas summer. They need to use some common sense! Buy a baby doll for Christ’s sake!

i agree, however some dogs have been bred to the point that they literally can not survive outside. domestic dogs are not wild dogs or wolves, we have selectively bred them out of that natural state and along with it we have bred out their ability to survive in the wild. it depends on where you live and the weather. you have to do what is best for your dog. a dogs needs vary by breed. like you would not want to live in a climate that snows year round and have a little mini poodle and expect it to live outside 24/7. it would be dead an a couple of days! you can actually be heavily fined and have your dog taken away if you are reported to police for leaving a breed out that can not handle it.
i have a little minpin/beagle mix who is only 10 pounds full grown, he lives indoors. he is so small he could get snatched by a hawk or coyote or other dog, plus he shivers from cold whenever he goes outside even if it is 60 degrees.
on the other hand, i have had labs all my life, none of which have ever lived indoors once they became old enough. (8-10 months old)

O MY GOD when i see a dog with clothes on i wanna rip off the head of the owner. anyways, i don’t know why but i make my dog live inside with me right now for 2 reasons
1: we just moved out into the country with all the wildlife, but there’s no fence yet and a highway right in front of me
2: im in upstate new york, and its been getting down to like -25 F at night and up to about 10-25 F during the day.
but in the summer when i build my fence(closely hidden by trees) and its warmer my dogs will be outside all day. im glad dogs love the outdoors by the way, because so do i. and there’s a very isolated waterfall nearby.
Maya
my dogs live inside with me because I want them to. Growing up, we had dogs that lived outside and that was OK too. My manchester wears a coat when it is below zero, but that’s it. And many of the dog breeds now are not meant to survive in the wild. they are too far removed from their wolf ancesters.

For one thing, not every pet owner dresses their dog. I’d say its a very small majority of people who buy clothes for their pets.
But thats besides the point. When we domesticated dogs some 10,000 years ago, we took on the responsibility of taking care of them. We took advantage of what they had to offer: assistance in hunting, protection from predators, companionship, etc.
Today, we don’t need dogs the same way we used to. Instead of hunting for our food, most of us go to the store. We have security alarms in our homes and guns to protect us. But does that mean that we should send dogs into the wilderness to fend for themselves now that they are of no use to us? That sounds like a terrible deal.
Also, consider this: globalization has led to all kinds of changes in our individual cultures. One way that our world has changed is that dogs who were bred to survive in one area have been exported to other places. For example, chihuahuas are all over the world, even in cold climates. If a chihuahua was living in Mexico, it probably wouldn’t need a coat. However, when one is living in Boston, it needs protection from the wind and cold. Not all dogs are the same.

Some dogs are suited to live outside. My two (a Lab mix and a Lab/GSD) are not equipped to live outside in a Minnesota winter, especially this particular one. During the summer I keep them outside as long as the weather is good. They do sleep inside, though, because dogs are pack animals. That’s another reason why many dogs are inside dogs: to be near their pack. Very rarely does a wolf live as a loner (although Ol’ Three Legs, the legend of Becker County, comes to mind).
As for spoiling dogs, it depends on how far you’re talking. For instance, my Lab/GSD mix has two Nylabones to chew on. When they get all chewed out, they get replaced. Is that spoiling? No. I don’t coddle my dogs to their every whim. They’re my companions, but I don’t forget that they are dogs.
I don’t have an issue with people who dress their dogs, as long as it’s for warmth. What really bugs me are the people who refer to them as their children. I mean, yeah, sometimes I’ll call my dogs my ‘kids’ in a joking matter. But the people who completely go all out…it just annoys me for some reason. For instance, my in-laws refer to their two cats as kids. They give my husband gifts from his ‘brothers’ (he’s an only child). Between that and the people who dress their dogs up just because they can…there are some things I just will never understand.
Edit: Hey, I love the outdoors too. But as resourceful as I am, I prefer living in a house when the weather is like it is right now: a balmy -9 degrees (-23 with the wind chill factor). If I wanted my dogs to get frostbitten paws, noses, ears, etc. then sure, I’d leave them outside. But since I care about my dogs and their health, they stay inside more during the winter. If you want to come to my neck of the woods and live outside 24/7, be my guest. I’ll be glad to drive you to the ER when you develop hypothermia from exposure.
Paige
Your family pet is suppose to live inside, with lots of outside time. If you are talking about a little pink dress yes that is wrong but when it’s 20 below outside a coat is ok.
Evelyn
Hm some people seem to think that keeping a dog outside is equal to him being wild. It’s not like they have to fend for themselves, they’re in a yard! And keeping a dog in the yard instead of the house doesn’t mean people love them less.
Our family dogs have always been outside dogs. We always have large yards and large dogs. They have warm kennels that are kept out of the wind and under the veranda, right by the door. They eat outside. They play outside; they love it!
Granted, if the weather is awful we let them in. But as soon as they get bored they chose to go out again; it doesn’t take them long. It never gets even close to cold enough to snow here, so it’s not too cold for them. They know they’re members of the family, and that they’re loved, but they also know their place in the ‘pack’.
Lily
Get your facts straight. Dogs are PACK ANIMALS, they want to be where their pack is. If the pack is outside, they’re outside, if the pack in inside, they’re inside. dogs enjoy being indoors too. it’s not cruel. Some dogs, such as Greyhounds and Whippets have smooth, short coats and NEED to wear coats in cold weather. Isn’t it freezing over in the US atm? those dogs aren’t made for freezing climates, hence their lack of a double coat. Dressing up dogs in little skirts and hats, now that’s a little much. Many dogs don’t even mind wearing a doggie jumper. They like to feel snuggly and warm too! So don’t label things as tourture when you obviously don’t know much about dogs.
