How can I get my dog to stop chewing furniture?
azrielle asked:
So…yesterday my dog chewed up our brand new coffee table. His chewing is getting really out of hand. When we are home we have to watch him 100% of the time closely or he will chew. If we leave or need to stop watching him for a second we have to put him in a crate. Anyone know what we can do? We are at our wits end, he also has ruined other furniture.
He has plenty of toys everywhere so I don’t think he is bored, he just prefers furniture I think

Sprinkle a little cayenne pepper on it …

Go to petsmart or petco, they sell a bottle spray that u can use on furniture, plans, walls, mostly everything, it will keep ur dog away from the area that u spray it on.

My puppy started to chew soon after we got him, so I went in search of a remedy. I came up with a spray, which is totally safe for wood, called bitter apple. You just spray it on, and it gives the dog an incredibly bitter taste when they go to chew something. It worked wonders! My puppy only tried to chew a couple of times, before he realized what a bad taste it was. I also heard cayenne pepper works great, but the bitter apple was the best thing for me.

How old is this dog because it *sounds* like he just hasn’t gotten proper house manners down yet. Crating is NOT just for housebreaking, it’s for all house training. So to make things easier, take away all buy 3 toys (you can rotate if he gets bored). Every single time he starts to chew anything he shouldn’t, growl out a very firm NO! at him and hand him a toy, praise when he’s chewing the correct thing. Really it’s just the same as potty training, be consistent and don’t let up, don’t leave him where you can’t see him until he’s learned to have the house manners he needs. HTH
*** After he knows not to chew up the house you can leave all his toys around, but limiting it while the dog is learning helps.

There are several things you can put on items to deter chewing. I like pure tobasco (hot sauce) myself. It sends a very clear, immediate message to the guilty party, asap.
Get a small box, basket, milk crate, some sort of container to put in the family area of the house and fill it with all sorts of chew toys that are appropriate for the dog to have. When the dog is caught chewing on anything innapropriate:
1. Remove dog from object firmly, giving mild correction (he’s learning).
2. Take the dog over to the toy box and give praise. This is the good place for chew stuff.
3. Either remove the object he was chewing on, or treat it.
Puppies go nuts in the chewing cycle till all adult teeth have come in at about 9 months. Till then, it’s like running after a hyperactive 2 year old holding scissors as they run through the house.
Lots of chew toys.
Good luck!

I take your dog either does not like the taste or texture of his toys, and prefers the taste and texture of the coffee table, or he thinks that EVERYTHING is a chewing toy.
Give him different toys with different textures, and see which ones he prefers. When you catch him getting to chew furniture, or other things, say NO, and give him his chew toy.
You can buy some stuff in a petstore that you can spray on the furniture, and it discourages the dog to chew. (it has a bitter taste).
Have a spray bottle handy, and when the dog is about to chew, or you catch him chewing furniture, spray him. (Preferably, he should not see you and should think, the negative event came from the furniture itself).
Roll up some newspapers, and whenever the dog is about to chew something, hit the floor or another furniture with the newspaper behind the dog, (again, ideally he should not know that the noise comes from you). This will not hurt him, but he will get startled, and hopefully, will avoid that particular object.
Put valuable objects out of his reach.
Put him in a crate, or a chew safe area fenced with a baby gate, when you can’t watch him.
Good luck!

We had a shih-tzu who did that and we made sure to play with him for a while every day. We also had a spray bottle for when he chewed the furniture. He eventually gave it up. Also, if he is under a year or so old, you kinda have to wait it out cause he’s teething. Make sure he has toys that are hard, like an old shoe or something.
