Tips on Training your Dog – Things you Need to Know!

Athanasios G. asked:

One of the most rewarding or frustrating experiences you can have is training your dog or new puppy. Having the right information before buying that cute little doggie is crucial to your success. If you are a first time buyer, do yourself a huge favor and choose a breed of dog that is easy to train. Having an easily trained dog is a huge help. If you already have chosen the dog, it is imperative that you use proper training technique from day one. If your dog learns bad habits, you may not be able to undo them, so be careful with your training.

Tip #1 for Training Your Dog – Consistency is the Key!

You must decide up front what you want your dog to be doing every minute of the day. You need to be consistent about everything in their daily routine. They need to be fed at the same time every day, played with every day, sleep in the same place, eliminate at certain times and in the right place, etc. Every facet of their first days with you must be consistent if training your dog is your objective. It is easier to be consistent if one person is in charge of training your dog. If there are too many trainers, chances are the message will change slightly with each person. This will delay your dog’s training. The puppy will become confused and unhappy. You do not want this to happen. Decide what the rules will be regarding feeding, furniture, access to the house, etc. and make sure everyone who comes in contact with the dog knows and follows the same rules. Consistency is the key to success.

Tip #2 for Training Your Dog – Have the Patience of a Saint

Dog training can strain the patience of almost anyone. You can limit this problem by closely monitoring your new dog’s behaviors the first few weeks they are in your home. Keep the puppy off your carpet. The temptation will be too great to have an accident. No matter how much you clean the carpet, they will always know where the incident occurred and will go there again and again. Limit their movements to places easily cleaned up. If your whole house is carpeted, consider getting an aquarium instead.

Tip #3 for Training Your Dog – Praise, Praise, Praise!

Your puppy will eventually do something right. When they do, praise them and make a big deal of their good behavior. Dogs love to please us, we just need to make sure they understand what the rules are. Young puppies can also get a doggie treat, but make sure you don’t overdo it as they will eventually follow the rules only to get a treat, something you do not want. Make sure you use a stern voice when correcting bad behavior. If you are angry, don’t show it. Your dog should not grow up fearful. If they do, they will skulk and cringe and show neurotic behavior for the rest of their lives, a really sad thing to see.

Those are the tips I have to share for now. Training your dog should be a great experience for you and the dog. Remember, the effort you put in now will be returned to you a hundred times over. Dogs are truly our best friends.
