Training pitt bulls aggression?

Pittlover asked:

I have a dog well two to be exact and there both pitt bulls. But Im only having a problem with one. Ive had my female since she was 8 weeks and she is now a year and 5 months and I adopted the male from the shelter about 5 months ago and he was aproximated around the same age as my female. He was timid at first i think he was abused, showed all signs of it, and was so very thin when i got him. He was 45 pounds and for a pitt thats bad. He now weights 65 ive put alot of weigh on him. Hes getting comfortable here now and started getting agressive towards his food. He will go after my female if she goes near him when hes eating and he growls at me pretty harsh if i go near him when hes eating. Im not steriotypical of pitts, thats why i own them i love them, but if one does decide to be agressive its not a good thing. Is there any way I can get him out of this habbit or am i just in trouble here? can you fix aggression towards food or if a pitt decides to be agressive is that it for him? I love him so much and want to get him out of that habbit but if I cant theres only one other option because i will not take chances on a mean pitt.
Hes not just aggressive towards my female, hes also agressive towards people when hes eating.

Obedience training, or when it is feeding time feed tem separately, my dogs were like that af first, but I fed them separately, then introduced them together little by little, now they eat well together.

I have two dogs also. One is a Pit Bull from our local SPCA, the other a mutt that we affectionately refer to as dog-zilla. They too have food agression. I think it’s not uncommon. Just feed them seperately and watch them closely.

he has food guarding aggression, he must have had a bad experience when he was small. Its really hard to change his guarding but he has to learn that he dont have to always guard his food. He feels threatened as if someone will take his food away. try pitbullforum.com or pitbull-chat.com for advice

    THIS IS SERIOUS.
what Gloria Stillwell did with one dog was to HAND feed the dog.
This teaches the dog that food COMES FROM the hand and you shouldn’t bite it.
BUT THIS WAS NOT a pitt.
    And Pitts are obstinate!
I would get a GOOD trainer that deals with this particular issue

Personally I would fear for children around an animal who exibits that type of agression.
CONTACT Gloria Stillwell on its me or the dog on ANIMAL PLANET… they are looking for new dogs for shows.
    good luck

Well 45 pounds isnt bad for a APBT. They should weigh full grown only 22 – 65 pounds. Your dog is acting as a pack-leader. You should walk him or exercise him in general more often and get him tired. Make sure you walk directly next to him or in front of him. Pack-Leaders always lead the way in front. Im only 14 so I dont have as much experience as I guess most people do but I do this allot. When it’s time to feed him you should make him do something to get it. Like sit, stay, lay down, wait, or something like that. Dont let him get the food until YOU say he can. Make him earn it. I hope I helped. Good luck.

BTW it’s Pit not Pitt. Really it’s American Pit Bull Terrier.

I have a female pit bull adopted at 7 mos of age. I found a great site full of information that I would suggest signing up for. Its called PitBull-L. PitBull-L Subscription, Guidelines and Settings:

They are all pit bull owners with lots of training experience.
